Animal Health, Associate of Applied Science
Program Description
The School of Biological Sciences has adopted the principles of "One Health", a transdisciplinary approach to health, where the goal of achieving optimal health outcomes recognizes the interconnection between people, animals, plans, and their shared environment.
The AAS in Animal Health is an intensive set of applied Biology courses designed to train students in the field of Animal Health. The goals of the degree are to introduce students to microbial, viral and parasitic vectors of disease, within the context of an animal's nutrition, behavior, physiology and genotype. Students will also address how environmental conditional contribute to the spread of disease through populations (ecology) and how animal disease can transfer to human populations (zoonoses). The degree can be used as a terminal degree, but student are encouraged to complete the BS Biology: Animal Biology.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Assess/identify vectors of animal disease conditional related to bacterial, viral and parasitic infections.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of animal anatomy, physiology, nutrition and behavior in the onset of disease.
- Demonstrate a comprehension of how the ecology of animal disease can lead to epidemics and zoonoses.
- Promote animal health and prevent animal disease by recognizing the causes of disease allowing appropriate intervention.
