Regional Centers and Locations
Lake Superior State University extends its educational reach beyond the main campus through its Regional Centers and the STEP UP (Success Through Educational Pathways in the Upper Peninsula) Prison Education Program. These initiatives reflect LSSU's commitment to increasing access to high-quality education for diverse populations across Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.
The Regional Centers serve students in Escanaba and Iron Mountain through a partnership with Bay de Noc Community College (Bay College) and in Petoskey in collaboration with North Central Michigan College (NCMC). These centers are designed to provide a smooth transition for students moving from community colleges to a four-year degree. Consortium agreements allow students to enroll concurrently in courses at both LSSU and their community college, with financial aid applicable across both institutions.
Originally focused on onsite degree completion, the Regional Centers now offer increased flexibility through synchronous and asynchronous online instruction. This format ensures continued engagement with LSSU’s main campus faculty while addressing the needs of non-traditional students, including working adults and those bound by geographic constraints.
The STEP UP Prison Education Program, housed at the Chippewa Correctional Facility, provides a fully in-person, cohort-based learning model for incarcerated students pursuing an Associate in Small Business Administration. All courses are taken together in a structured, supportive environment coordinated with the Michigan Department of Corrections.
